Who are you?

I think one of the most challenging tasks as a creative person is trying to brand yourself. How do you want to present yourself to the world? What best explains your personality and creative capabilities?

Business cards can tell a lot about a designer before you even get to their portfolio. What does your business card say about you?

JUDGE a book by its cover...

Ever walked into your favorite book store and had a book cover stop you in your tracks? I know they always say, "don't judge a book by its cover"...but come on, how can you resist a cleverly designed cover?

Especially books like Julio Verne's Viagem ao Centro da Terra. The dimensions created in the cover below are stunning and meticulous. What's your favorite cover art?

Gimme some chalk...STAT!

How inspiring are these chalkboard hand drawings?! Sometimes I honestly ask myself HOW do people create such amazing dimensions with chalk and HOW can I learn how to do it? A DYI project I've been wanting to do, oh so badly, is to find an antique mirror and paint the glass part with chalkboard paint. I think its time for me to go thrifting...stay tuned ;)

Design by Nature

Sometimes the most beautiful design comes from right outside your door. Nature, in all its organic and whimsical ways, creates design everyday without even trying. Next time you reach that creative wall, go outside on an adventure (bike ride, fishing, hiking or simply a good old fashioned blanket and book) and let your mind wander freely. You may be surprised at what is right in front of your eyes...

Ge·o·met·ric Tango

The possibilities are endless when it comes to geometric design. I won't kid myself into thinking that I'm great at free hand drawing (although I'm trying to experiment with it more), so I tend to lean more towards the geometric side. I like clean, organized, almost grid like design.

Here are a few striking images that I think make good use of turning simple shapes into a more complex visual.

Black & White Simplicity

Yesterday was all about bright colors and beautiful patterns. Today I wanted to focus on the opposite. The sweet simplicity of black and white logos.

It's interesting how I started off looking at the most elaborate and colorful logos this morning (don't worry it will be a future post, they were pretty amazing!) but I slowly found myself only looking at black and white images and thinking to myself how visually striking they were in their own way. In my own personal work I struggle with MORE COLOR, MORE COLOR....I think it may be time to switch up that mind set for a little bit...

Pattern Play

Patterns. A small (ok not so small) obsession of mines. The color combinations and shapes create this magical sensory overload for me that I can't seem to get enough of. They also serve as the perfect go-to-guide for color palette inspiration! Whether it's soft neutrals, vibrant stripes, or BOTH mixed together...it's impossible not to be inspired.

Package me up...

Monday morning blues? Yeah me too. What is it about Monday's that are so hard? I think my biggest challenge is getting back into the swing of things post weekend fun. Am I right?

What I like to do to get my creative cap on at the start of the week is to take some time out of my morning to pursue design blogs and be inspired by fellow designers.

Today I wanted to share some awesome packaging that has a beautiful mixture of strong type treatment and imagery.

Introductions & Oh so lovely type...

Welcome to Wild Fern :: The Blog!

My name is Erika and I'm a graphic designer living in Charlottesville, VA. I'm lucky enough to wake up everyday to a breath-taking view of the mountains right in my backyard, which inspires me and fuels my passion for the visual arts.

I'm creating this blog, in partnership with my website, as a place for me to house design inspiration I find and to share with fellow artists.

I figured what better way to break the ice than with some typography eye candy. How about it?!
